Meet the Hiner Family!
Dear Grand Master Hafner,
How has Karate helped me? I have contemplated this question throughout my busy days, compiling lists and examples.
Improved physical strength, self esteem, focus, the lists go on! Then today this simple answer came to me.
Balance. We all face a number of challenges on any given day. The “old” me was constantly reacting to those daily challenges. Reaction mode lead to overwhelming frustration, negativity and anger. I was an emotional sponge absorbing the anxiety of others, making it my own.
That sponge can only hold so much before it begins spilling out onto others. Unfortunately, relationships with family, friends, coworkers begin to suffer. Negativity breeding more negativity. What a viscous cycle!
Enter two years of Karate training. The change has been gradual, and I did not really notice it until recently. I have become balanced. Balanced, focused, disciplined, centered, pick your term. I no longer react to daily challenges, but take them in stride. I now know there is something to learn in each of these challenges if I take the time to look for it!
I no longer accept the negative emotions and anxiety of others. They are not mine to take on. I am able to better manage my own state, and remain focused. Balanced.
The result? My relationships with my family, friends, coworkers, and most importantly, myself have blossomed. Just the other night, my wife looked at me and said, “I love who you are becoming”. (Then quickly clarified it’s more than just the physical improvements!)
Of course, we all change as we go through life. I have experienced a great deal of positive change, and attribute much of it to my Martial Arts training at your school. I feel balanced.
Thank you,
Jim Hiner
