What is Better Than Teaching?

Learning, of course.

Don’t scoff.  Lots of teaching goes on with very little learning taking place.

And, every day, people learn — without “teaching” being present.

Here’s how it works:  motivated learners find a way; without, often in spite of, teachers.

So — what is the teacher supposed to do?

In the old model, the teacher was the source of information.  Nobody knew anything.  Along comes the teacher, who knows a bunch.

Her job (in the old model)? To dispense information.

In the new model, the role of the teacher is much different.

Previously, he was a bank of information.

Now, information is everywhere. Free, and at our fingertips.

Today’s teacher must know how to inspire people to learn. To motivate; encourage; and — above all, to paint a bright future in the minds of the students.
