How to Lead.

Two ways to lead:  authority and influence.

Each has its place.

Need to get some people out of a burning building?  Jump up and down, yell and scream, call people names…

Probably the best way, what with the fire and all.

Not the best way to get the kids to make their beds, though.  Not the best way to get the team to succeed with a project. Get the team to hit the cutoff man…

Many in leadership positions rely heavily on authority. They are less skilled in influence.

The problem?  Unless you are in the military, or are willing to fire employees, kids, pets, etc…you really have no authority.

Even if you think you do.

Reason?  People can “quit” you anytime they want.

Often it goes like this, though.

Leader relies too heavily on authority.  Relationships deteriorate, rapport is broken.

Those under the leader often then APPEAR to comply…but covertly sabotage the leader’s efforts.

Watch teams, companies, families, closely.  You’ll see what I mean.
