If I Were King….
School (grades 1 – 12)would work like this:
1. 10 weeks of classes, followed by a one week break; 3 weeks off in July…eliminating the long summer vacation. If learning is good, why are we taking a quarter of the year off?
2. Students would work harder while they were at school. Much harder. Then…NO homework.
3. Curriculum: way more mastery of basics and their real life application; less skimming of advanced topics. I’m around teens all the time. Kids studying calculus who can’t figure out how to mark the t-shirts down 15%.
4. Uniforms. Yup, you heard right. Uniforms.
5. Eliminate most (all?) elective subjects. This frees up a ton of time for more work on academic subjects. Then, because there is no homework, students are free to pursue art, music, athletics on their own, after school is out.
