Baby Watching.
Two milestones in a soon-to-be one year old’s life: learning to walk and learning to speak.
These two skills represent two different ways in which we human beings learn.
Learning to walk is an EVENT. You can’t walk, and pretty much all at one time, the switch goes on, and you can. Soon, you can run.
Learning to speak is a PROCESS. Unlike walking, speaking happens VERY gradually. Improvements are made slowly, and, unlike walking, can continue to be made, over a lifetime.
When it comes to teaching, teachers, bosses, coaches, etc. often confuse the two.
Skills that need to be learned by PROCESS are often taught as if they were EVENTS.
